Nailsworth Silver Band (Nailsworth News submission November 2007)

There was fantastic news for the band this month when we became the proud recipients of the first Passage To India Award. We are very grateful to Mr. Rohman for his generosity which coincided with the relaunch of Nailsworth Junior Brass. We have already committed £250 of our award to funding music workshops at 9 local schools which do not currently have visiting brass teachers. Philip Storer, our Junior Brass leader, will be staging these workshops in conjunction with Gloucestershire Music with the intention of encouraging the youngsters to take up brass.

The band were recently invited to play, by Steve Robinson of the Gloucestershire Youth Partnership, at the Stroud Youth Fest. Our youthful band was pleased to play a part in this ‘celebration of youth’ and was well received. We were also very proud to once again be invited to lead the Remembrance Day parade and play the hymns for the service. This year in addition to marching to our old favourite Slaidburn you would have heard the familiar sounds of Colonel Bogey filling the streets of Nailsworth. This year The Last Post was played by Kerry Mc Dougall.

We are now looking ahead to our busiest time of year as we prepare for our annual concert on 9th December at Christchurch. Stephen Rockey has put together a very entertaining program which, in addition to some festive numbers, includes:

  • Share My Yoke (cornet solo)
  • Last of the Summer Wine (arranged by Stephen Rockey)
  • Jurassic Park
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Men of Harlech
  • All Through the Night
  • Watching the Wheat (Euphonium solo)
  • Castell Coch (March)
  • Grieg’s Morning Mood

This year tickets for this concert will be available from Nailsworth’s party shop ‘Festivity’ in Fountain Street who also do a superb job for us throughout the year managing the ticket sales for our Jazz events. (Our next jazz night is on the preceding evening where we will play hosts to Bev Pegg and his Good Time Jazz Band.).

You will also see us out and about at many local events including the Christingle evening and The Green Man Carol Service.
