Nailsworth Band was founded in 1919. One of the founder members was Mr. James Portbury, whose son, Jim who still lives locally, later conducted the band. As Musical Director Jim composed a special piece of music "Gatcombe Park"in 1978 when Princess Anne visited Nailsworth. We performed again in front of royalty when Prince Charles visited Leighterton Primary school in July 2007. This was Stephen Rockey (our Musical Director)’s first public engagement with the band.
The band has performed at many local events including The Randwick Wop, Hawkesbury Upton Horticultural show, Stratford Park Band Stand, Horsley Fete to name but a few. This year has seen an unprecedented interest in the band and we have been inundated with requests to perform. It will be the busiest year for a considerable time.
Each year our annual Philip Sawyer Memorial Concert raises money for local charities. Last year we staged an additional charity concert for Jonathan Brough, a local young man left paralyzed by Meningitis.
Our main band rehearses on Monday evenings in our own band room. New players are always welcomed. The Training Band also meets on Monday evenings and welcomes players of all ages. It is an ideal opportunity for parents and children to learn alongside each other.
