Nailsworth Silver Band formed in 1919. This photo was taken in 1923 before Jim Portbuury left to go to work in London. The band are wearing old Red Cross uniforms purchased after world war 1. The photo records the gift of a set of solid silver cap badges presented by Mrs. Smith of the family of Nailsworth Solicitors A.E.Smith & Sons.(hence the caption on the silver plaque).
When the band restarted (after the Second World War) in 1946 five of these musicians continued to play in the band, namely: Walt Furley, Frank Jenner, "Becky" Newman, Bill Alway, & Walter Brown.
