Nailsworth Band Shield

Nailsworth Band was founded in 1919. One of the founder members was Mr. James Portbury, whoose son, Jim, later conducted the band. Jim Portbury junior also has a son, Robert, who currently plays Bb Bass in the Band, so there is a direct family link between the original Band and the present one.

It was another founder member, Mr. Albert "Becky" Newman, who was responsible for re-forming the Band in 1945 after World War Two. In 1948 Nailsworth amalgamated with Horsley to become the Nailsworth and Horsley Silver Band which, with Jack Cook as Bandmaster, went from strength to strength in the fifties and sixties. It was during this time that Ellis Williams, doyen of the local brass band scene, took the Band to several of their contest successes, notable ones being the old Minchinhampton and Brimscombe contests.

Other well known brass bandsmen associated with Nailsworth include the late Fred Clark of Thrupp, who was still playing with the Band when well into his eighties, and the late Jock McCamley, the ex-Scots Guards euphonium/trombone player whoose untimely death robbed the Band of a fine musician. The McCamley Cup is now awarded annually to a promising young Band member in his memory.

The Band performed for Royalty in 1978, when Princess Anne visited Nailsworth, the then Musical Director, Jim Portbury, composing a special piece of music - "Gatcombe Park" - for the occasion.

Trevor Picken, who took the Band to victory in the first Stroud Brass Band Festival Entertainments Contest in 1976, returned as Musical Director in 1985 and soon made his presence felt, the Band gaining fourth prize in the Stroud Contest Fourth Section only a month later.

In 2004 Wesley Thomas became Musical Director and continued to improve the Band, taking them to second place in the Forest of Dean Fourth Section Entertainments contest in February 2005. Click here for old photographs
